Eliza Gooud's Family

Eliza Gooud migrated to Sydney in 1853 aged 16, with her mother and stepfather and lived at Ryde.

Eliza had an illegitimate daughter in 1857. She was born at Kissing Point Bay near Ryde, presumably where Eliza had been living or working.

Eliza later married Julius Kerr, an Irish immigrant also living at Ryde, in 1862. The wedding took place at Scot's Church, Sydney, where they were married by the Rev John Dunmore Lang. Eliza and Julius had ten further children, of whom eight survived childhood. The Kerrs lived at Ryde until at least 1868, then at Isabella St Camperdown 1879-1883, at Newtown 1886, and at 30 Cove St Balmain from 1898 - 1903. Julius was described as a Joiner in 1879 a builder in 1883. Eliza died of an enlarged liver in November 1881, the year their youngest daughter was born.   She was only 45 years of age.  Julius died in 1904.

Some people have wondered if our past Governor General, Sir John Kerr, is related to this Kerr family. The following entry from Who's Who indicates he is not directly related, although it is interesting that he also came from Balmain.

John Robert Kerr llB QC  NSW, son of H. Kerr, Sydney; born Sept 24, 1914, Sydney. Educated Fort St Boys High School, Sydney University, admitted NSW Bar 1938, QC 1953, 2nd AIF 1942-46, etc.  m. Nov 4, 1938, Alison (d. Frederick Worstead), 1s, 2d, address (1955) 62 Kissing Point Rd, Turramurra. ....

His parents appear to have been Harry Kerr, a Balmain boilermaker, and Laura (nee Cardwell) who were married at Balmain North in 1913.
