Father David Gooud


Fr David Gooud Fr David Gooud (1935) died on 20 March 2003, aged 85 years. In recent years he had been living in retirement at Nazareth Village, North Belmont.

He had come to St Joseph's College in 1932 from Wallsend. He passed the Leaving Certificate in 1935 and then began his studies for the priesthood, at first at Springwood, and then at Propaganda College, Rome. He was ordained in Rome in 1942. Further studies in Rome were hindered by the war, and he left Italy, travelling to Lisbon and then to London and Ireland. He studied for a doctorate at Maynooth College in Ireland.

In 1946 he returned to Australia, to the Maitland Diocese. During his many years in the diocese he was Assistant Priest in Newcastle, East Maitland, Dungog, Singleton, and New Lambton. He was Parish Priest in Nelson Bay, Belmont, Shortland and Mayfield West.

Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Fr David Gooud was offered in Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hamilton, on 26th March, and burial took place in the Priest's Section of Sandgate Cemetery.

Amongst the many former relatives, parishioners and friends who are saddened by the death of Fr Gooud is Jack Nicol (1935), his classmate at St Joseph's College. Jack had frequently visited Fr Gooud, especially when Fr Gooud was in Nazareth Village.
