For later generations, each succeeding generation will open a new window which will not have an index panel. This allows switching between the new and previous windows using the taskbar indicator at the bottom of the screen. To exit from a 'new window' simply press the 'x' in the far top right of the screen. Links opening a new window are generally those accessed from within a (right hand) display frame.
A caption will normally appear if you place the mouse cursor over a picture for a few seconds.
To view an enlargement of a picture, Right Click on the picture and select 'View Image' from the menu that appears. To return to the text, use the 'back' button on the browser's toolbar.
