James Gooud's Family

Charles Gooud

Charles Charles Gooud b. 1873; d. 1924.

There is a family story that Charles was engaged to be married to a Miss Best when his father died in 1915, leaving the young family without support. He broke off his engagement and devoted the rest of his life to caring for his young half brothers and sisters.

extract from "St John's Church Balmain" historical booklet:

In 1924 Charles Gooud died and St John's lost one of its most faithful and hardworking parishioners. His association with the church had begun in the little Sunday School in Reuss Street before the church was built. In 1902, aged 25, he became Superintendent of the Sunday School, a position he held until his death. He also held a position as Church Warden and for many years was Choir Master. A keen sportsman, Charlie Gooud was largely responsible for forming the Birchgrove Sailing Club and he played a major role in the running of the St John's Boys Association

The beautiful oak reredos was dedicated to the memory of Charles Gooud and a brass tablet on the south wall commemorates his lifelong work for the church. Later an organ stop was also dedicated in memory of his contribution to the musical life of St John's.

Lorraine Gooud provided these photographs of Charles and his father with their racing yacht "Unique" in Sydney Harbour.  There is another photo in the section on James' son, Leslie Gooud.
