Charles was born in 1896. His father died when he was just one year old and his mother, Edith, married Frederick W P Schliebs in 1903. Some time later, the family changed the name to Shiels, presumably to avoid anti-German sentiment during World War 1.
He served in the 15th Battalion, 1st AIF, when he lived at Water Street, Balmain
Charles Shiels married Doris May Murnane at Junee, NSW, in 1924 and they had three children.
- Allan Warren Shiels b. 1925. Allan joined the RAAF in World War 2 and attained the rank of Sergeant. He died aged 19 in 1944, when the Wellington bomber he was crewing crashed on landing after a mission over Germany. He is buried at Botley Cemetery, Oxford and commemorated in the RAAF Church, St Clement Dane's, the Strand, London. Details on Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site
- Joan Shiels b. 1926. Joan married Kevin Herbert Hill at Balmain and they have three children and nine grandchildren.
- Darryl Stanley Shiels b. 1928. Darryl died 13th Feb 1962 on a scenic flight in New Zealand. His body was never found.
