Clifford Benning Newland

Clifford was born on the 6th September, 1908 at Streaky Bay - the first born to Ben & Winifred.
On the 29th November, 1940 at Elliston, Eyre Peninsula, Clifford married Janet Ada Penna.
Two children were born to Clifford and Janet.

When Clifford was born in 1908 his father had a farm near Petina, about 22 miles from Streaky Bay. In May 1917 the family went to Adelaide. From then on, His father was managing stations in the north of South Australia and Clifford lived with an Aunt who had a boarding house at Glenelg, going home for the Christmas holidays.

At the end of 1924, having completed his "Intermediate" exams, he went to join his parents who were then at Cordillo Downs. Clifford worked there for a few months but his father decided he should return to Adelaide to do some more educatiion. Clifford decided to get a job and do night school. After ten years, having completed accountancy studies, he got another job as Secretary to a dried fruit company at Renmark. Soon after taking up the position, war was declared (3.9.45) and he was keen to join Field artillery in which he had been trained, but dried fruit was a declared industry and he was prevented from joining up.

In 1965 Clifford joined the Riverland Fruit Products Ltd. - a fruit canning company with headquarters at Berri, a town nearby. Clifford was Company Secretary then General Manager when he retired in 1975.
Janet died in 1989 and Colin in 1999.
