Samuel married Susannah Wicks in 1868 and they lived in Church-st Ryde until his death in 1905. After Samuel's death, Susannah lived in Ryde until she died in 1941, in her 91st year. Susannah was a daughter of Robert Wicks and Elizabeth (Small) of Ryde, two long established Ryde families.Samuel was listed variously as fruitgrower, merchant, and fruit dealer. In 1893 he owned an 8 acre farm on Quarry-road Ryde.
He nominated for Alderman in 1893 but withdrew in favour of the other nominee, Charles Krust, Butcher, of Glebe-street.
Samuel and Susanna had eleven children of whom three died in infancy. Some of the descendants still live in the Ryde area.

- William Merrit (Brusha) born 1871 at Ryde; married Edith Elliot in 1893. William's occupation was stated as labourer. They had four children:
- Alma Susannah (1894 - 1984) married Arthur Ellis; two children -- Ernest Robert and Leslie
- William Samuel (1895 - 1965) married Ruby Constance Priestly and they had two children -- Jean and Keith. William Samuel became a butcher and had a shop in Railway Rd, Meadowbank in 1938.
- Robert Arthur (1896 - 1928) married Eleanor Elizabeth Baines and they had two children -- Beryl and Betty.
- Irene (1910 - 1973) married (1) Harold Brunton (two children) and (2) Mr Middleton.

- Samuel Arthur Fullford married Bertha Hannah Chatten; one son.
- Bertha born 1878 at Ryde, married George Woodcock in 1902. George was a son of John Woodcock, possibly John Woodcock the boatman of Field of Mars (Ermington). Woodcock and Best operated a steam launch Growers' Friend on the Parramatta River. George died in 1920 and Bertha married Charles Button in 1927.

- Mavis Claudine Woodcock married Cecil Lawrence Fitness. Five children.
