Samuel Best (1848 - 1905)

Samuel married Susannah Wicks in 1868 and they lived in Church-st Ryde until his death in 1905. After Samuel's death, Susannah lived in Ryde until she died in 1941, in her 91st year. Susannah was a daughter of Robert Wicks and Elizabeth (Small) of Ryde, two long established Ryde families.

Samuel was listed variously as fruitgrower, merchant, and fruit dealer. In 1893 he owned an 8 acre farm on Quarry-road Ryde.

He nominated for Alderman in 1893 but withdrew in favour of the other nominee, Charles Krust, Butcher, of Glebe-street.

Samuel and Susanna had eleven children of whom three died in infancy. Some of the descendants still live in the Ryde area.
