The Family of William and Elizabeth Best of Durweston


William married Elizabeth Style in Bryanston in 1784 and they had the following children:

This family was apparently a problem to the authorities, as suggested by the following order to relocate them to the Parish of Pimporn (Pimperne). It is to be hoped that William and his family appreciated the literary style of the order.


General Order of Removal

To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Blandford Forum in the said County of Dorset to convey, and to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Pimporn in the said County of Dorset ~ to receive THESE.

Whereas complaint hath been made by you, the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Blandford Forum unto us whose Hands and Seals are hereunto set, two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace (whereof one is a quorum) for the County aforesaid, that William Best, Elizabeth his wife and John aged three years and Elizabeth aged about one year and a quarter their children have lately intruded and come into your said Parish of Blandford Forum there to inhabit as Parishioners contrary to the laws relating to the settlement of the poor and are become chargeable to the said Parish of Blandford Forum. And whereas upon due examination and enquiry made into the premises, as well as upon the oath of the said William Best as otherwise, it appears to us and we accordingly adjudge that the said William Best Elizabeth his wife and John and Elizabeth their children are become chargeable unto the said Parish of Blandford Forum and that the last legal place of settlement of the said William Best Elizabeth his wife and John and Elizabeth their children was and is the Parish of Pimporn aforesaid.

These are therefore in his Majesty's name to order and require you the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Blandford Forum aforesaid, That you or some of you, do forthwith remove and convey the said William Best Elizabeth his wife and John and Elizabeth their children from the said Parish of Blandford Forum to the said Parish of Pimporn and them deliver to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor there, or some of them, together with this our warrant or order, or a true copy thereof Whereby they are likewise required in his Majesty's name and by virtue of the Statutes in such case made, forthwith to receive the said William Best Elizabeth his wife and John and Elizabeth their children into their said Parish and provide for them as their own Parishioners.

Given under our Hands and Seals, the Sixth Day of April in the year of our Lord 1793.
