The Family of Maria Best and Alfred Hare

Maria – born in 1823 (one of triplets) and married Alfred Hare at Blandford Forum in 1843. Maria and Alfred had six children in Dorset before migrating to New South Wales. Alfred was a carpenter and joiner.Maria and Alfred sailed for New South Wales in the Plantaganet, arriving in 1857. Shipping papers note that they had relations in country - George Best of Ryde, Kissing Point, a first cousin - and that their fare (£54) was paid by George Best under the Remittance Regulations.

Three further children were born at Ryde. Maria and Alfred lived at Ryde and are buried at St Anne's Churchyard. d. 1881

• Annie, born 1844 in Dorset. Annie married Harry D T M Balmain in 1869. She died in 1927. Annie and Harry had the following children

• Bessie Jane, born 1848 in Dorset. Bessie married Newnham George Dennett at Redfern, NSW in 1882. Four sons were born, but neither these nor Bessie Jane are mentioned in Newnham's 1933 death notice.

• William DENNETT born 1888
• Frank DENNETT born 1889; died 1889
• Arthur DENNETT born 1889
• James Alfred was born in 1849 at Blandford. He married Nellie Florence Tyroll in 1882 at Sydney and died in 1890. There were three children
• Carl J born 1882, Walcha NSW
• Elsie M born 1883 at Inverell NSW
• Adele born 1888 at Junee NSW
Nellie married Christian W Berghofer in 1903
 
• Harry was born in 1851 at Blandford. He died at Sydney in 1893
• Arthur J was born in 1855 at Blandford. He died in 1931 at North Sydney
• Fanny Clare was born in 1858 at Ryde, NSW. She married Percy Charles Hardaker in 1888 and had six children.
• Sophie Matilda was born in 1860 at Ryde, NSW. She married Henry Folkard, a licensed surveyor, in 1882 at Walcha in NSW. Sophie and Henry had five children

• Amy was born in 1862 at Ryde, NSW. She married William H Fleming in 1884 at Bundarra, NSW. They had four children.
